The Great Firewall Of China

Published

on

Twitter and Hotmail have been blocked across mainland China, with the twitterverse up in arms that over a billion people are tweetless and that there’s actually anyone out there that still uses Hotmail.

The ban comes just two days before the 20th anniversary of the Tianamen Square Massacre when hundreds of demonstrators, mainly students, were shot dead for a holding a democratic protest.

Chinese authorities have now blocked access to Twitter, Flickr, Bing, Live.com, Hotmail, WordPress, YouTube, and Blogger.

While I may be the only jerk making inappropriate Hotmail jokes, the twitterverse is fired up about the Chinese ban on “Twitter, and almost everything else.” Some tweets suggested that the ban was due to profanity, others saying because talk about Tianamen started growing on the site.

The block of social networking sites is really not cool, but even though our twitter handle can no longer be marveled at, thankfully ASSME.org is still available to all Chinese citizens. Of course, probably not by the time I hit “publish.”
